White Is Not Right!
By Paddy-Jo Malpas
Carlisle housing association was left thousands of pounds in debt after residents dumped commercial waste and white goods in an amenity skip.
The waste, which included 14 fridges, 10 TVs and PCs, eight tyres and a car battery, had to be specially disposed of and cost the housing association over £3,000. As a result they have had to withdraw the service.
A spokesperson for the association said “We are keen to ensure that neighbourhoods are maintained to a level that creates an environment where people want to live. We are disappointed that we have had to withdraw this service and we hope that we will be able to offer an alternative to tenants as soon as possible.”
The increase in the quantity of white goods dumped in skips coincides with the introduction of a permit scheme at Bousteads Grassing, Carlisle’s household waste recycling centre.
The scheme was introduced to pin-point businesses using the site to dump commercial waste at the expense of the tax-payer. Mike Bareham, managing director of council-owned Cumbria Waste Management, says “It’s early doors but we are seeing reductions in waste tonnage of about 20 per cent.”
