Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) become compulsory for any construction contract worth over £300,000 this month, as new legislation comes into force. The Government’s Waste & Resource Action Programme (WRAP) has launched a new service to help skip hire, waste management and construction firms comply, providing an online template to ease the process of creating a SWMP.

The new legislation aims to cut down on the volume of waste resulting from construction projects, through the implementation of more efficient monitoring.
The WRAP template has been designed to ensure that firms more easily comply with the new rules. Mervyn Jones, of WRAP, says the template will “lead construction professionals through both the development and implementation of the plan, at each stage of construction.”
The new template comprises 14 steps to ensure compliance from the conception through to the completion of a construction project. The template is free to download from the WRAP web site: http://www.wrap.org.uk/construction
