A Balham woman was over the moon last month when Wandsworth Council's waste management team mounted a successful operation to recover her engagement ring, which she had mistakenly thrown in the bin!!
Although the woman realised she had made the terrible blunder fairly soon after doing so, her rubbish had already been collected by the council at that point.
In a panic, she phoned the council’s waste management team who then got in touch with the refuse contractor, Biffa. They were able to determine the exact lorry that had picked up her refuse and track it down.
Fortunately, by this point the lorry had not been emptied and they were able to intercept it at the waste transfer station, where it was diverted to a loading bay for the treasure hunt to commence...
The woman was able to rummage through the bin liners until she recognised her own, where she was lucky enough to be reunited with the ring.
Area waste manager, Jo Shearer, said “If they'd unloaded before we managed to contact them then there really would have been no chance of finding it - so we were very lucky to catch up with them in the nick of time.”
