THE ROTATOR!!!
The Skip presents a new design relating to loading and off-loading of all types of skips. Saving TIME and MONEY for YOU the operator.

The product is a step-less and unlimited rotation device which enables loading and off-loading of skips at any desired angle. The design offers many advantages, especially in urban areas where skips are often required to be placed in or collected from almost impossible locations.
The Skip Rotator Loading
Skips can be loaded or off-loaded over the sides of trailers. When large trailers with three skips loaded in a row are used, even the central skip can be easily reached. Extra devices previously used in these situations are now no longer required.

Surveys show that on average, skip-lorry drivers must perform 5 extra positioning movements per day to satisfy the customer’s wishes. These extra movements waste time and fuel which translates directly into higher running costs for the skip operator. Calculations show that a skip rotator can pay for itself in as little as 1 year.
The Skip Rotator in action
The skip rotator will also improve the longevity of a skip loader. With a skip rotator the telescopic arms are more evenly loaded which reduces wear. The skip rotator also prevents bending or twisting of a single telescopic arm through over-loading.
The rotary drive is an electric/pneumatic unit and is easily coupled to the existing power sources already present on the vehicle.

The skip rotator can be fitted to all makes of new or used skip-loaders up to a capacity of 18 tonnes.
Up to 4 empty skips can still be stacked on a vehicle fitted with a skip rotator.

These are available for £8850 + vat + delivery with fitting included
Grundy & Co Excavations Ltd from Widnes recently took delivery of their first Tana Shark Slow Speed High Torque Mobile Shredder from Global Recycling Solutions Ltd, to shred wood and skip waste for their recently formed skip business “Grundy Skip Waste Ltd”
Sean Parry from Grundy’s commented, “We purchased the Tana Shark because of its unique versatility, in that a screen can be fitted under the rotor to create a small particle size for wood waste. The screen can then be easily and quickly removed for shredding skip waste”
Wear Parts are easily replaced keeping downtime to a minimum. The Shark is powered by a Caterpillar C15 540 hp Diesel Engine which drives the 3 metre long Rotor through a Load Sensing Hydrostatic System. This ensures optimum performance and protects the Rotor Knives when non crushable objects are encountered.

How much does your drivers’ choccy cost you?

Abbey Fuelcards has warned that turning a blind eye to minor unauthorised purchases quickly dents companies’ finances. Sales and marketing manager Steve Clarke said: “Some drivers think that including chocolate bars or cans of soft drinks on a diesel receipt is a ‘perk’ which will be overlooked. Querying it takes too long for the amounts involved and might appear petty. But, just a handful of drivers taking only £1 each per day comes to an annual bill of £1,300.”
Abbey Fuelcards users are immune to such unauthorised perks. Unlike some cards, Abbey Fuelcards cards are limited to approved purchases: fuel, lubricants, AdBlue etc. However important a skip hire driver might think their snack, they can not simply ‘add it to the bill’ when filling up.
Other security options can include automatic highlighting of out-of-hours use. It is part of Abbey Fuelcards tailored service, with 24/7 online account access and dedicated account managers. One weekly invoice, VAT-approved and meeting with the European 6th Directive, replaces drivers’ irregularly submitted handfuls of paper receipts, bringing major savings on administration time and costs.
Abbey Fuelcards are designed to drive down costs, giving savings on fuel through fixed weekly prices typically 2p to 3p below marked pump prices. Almost as importantly, Abbey Fuelcards deliver greater security to help in preventing fraud and card misuse, for improved peace of mind.
Full advice and network details are offered so that applicants can choose the best card for their particular circumstances. Options include:
Diesel Direct:
discounted diesel at over 1,200 UK locations
Fastfuel:
discounted petrol and diesel at some 1,400 nationwide outlets
euroShell:
discounted diesel at motorway and major trunk road service stations
ACE:
the no-frills free card for savings on fuel nationwide with easy online account management

Hyva’s new Automatic Skiploader Sheeting System is proving to be a success with a large number of Waste Management Companies around the UK.
The system allows drivers to fully sheet a bin in under a minute ensuring they no longer have to get on the back of the vehicle at any time. The speed of the sheet also means an increase in productivity as time spent sheeting and unsheeting skips is reduced dramatically.

Companies such as Viridor Waste Management, Grundons and the Shorts Group have ordered new Skiploaders fitted with the System as they all feel Health and Safety is a top priority for them.

The system is hydraulically operated as oil is diverted with a lever control from the skiploader hydraulics. This allows for much greater control, speed and reliability than traditional air and electric systems. In addition the arm configuration means the system doesn’t increase the overall width of the vehicle which may cause access problems for drivers.
The sheeting system can also be retrofitted to all makes and models of skiploaders allowing entire fleets to standardise with the Hyva system.

The Skip Auto sheeting system was initially developed in close conjunction with the Ascot-based Shorts Group.
“We wanted to develop the Hyva sheeting system because we saw it as an all round winner. It offers increased productivity, increased safety and ease for the drivers. In our experience it is clearly successful in these areas” says Managing Director Gary Short.
He has been impressed with their driver’s response and the ease of use compared to other air and electric systems they have tried previously.
HTL Waste Management Services Limited, of Deptford, London, has recently taken delivery of a new generation Liebherr L 556-2plus2 High Lift Waste Handler. HTL is part of Hinkcroft Transport Limited, one of London’s leading independent waste management contractors, operating a state-of-the-art transfer station and recycling centre which handles and processes in the region of 200,000 tonnes a year.
The L 556-2plus2 plays an important role in loading and stockpiling at HTL’s Deptford premises. Materials handled are predominantly building and construction waste, ferrous and non-ferrous metals and domestic waste. The incoming raw waste materials are segregated, loaded into high-sided bulkers and transported to recycling centres in the region. Residues from the recyclables reclamation process are transferred by bulkers for final disposal.
This articulated, hydro-statically driven machine weighs in at 19.84 tonnes, with a tipping load of 7,200kg. The Liebherr made new generation engine develops 130kW and the high-tip bucket capacity is 4.5m. The hydrostatic driveline system on the loader not only contributes to considerable fuel consumption benefits (around 10 litres per hour on this particular waste handling application) but also, with limited slip differential in both front and rear axles, produces good efficient pushing power when stockpiling whilst, at the same time, prolonging tyre life.
The L 556-2plus2 owned by HTL features 3050mm high lift arms which produce a 5.3 metres dump height for easy loading of bulk trailers and waste processors. The 4.7 metres pin height of the high lift arm also allows the operator to compact material during the loading process.
The luxurious, air-conditioned operator’s cab features full instrumentation and has an air-suspended and fully adjustable seat. A weigh-load indicator and colour reverse camera system have been installed for maximum operational safety on this busy site. The cab is protected by an extra-heavy-duty screen guard and the loading shovel itself is also fully guarded under the belly of the front and rear articulated chassis, to protect the machine from site debris damage during the working cycles.
Since winning three major new contracts with The Environment Agency, Cambridgeshire County Council and Peterborough City Council, specialist drainage company ADC (East Anglia) Ltd has invested in new machinery and equipment, including a new 26-tonne GVW, Volvo FM9-380 6×4 gully-emptier.
The Euro 5-compliant FM, which is an additional vehicle, joins a fleet of 11
other Volvos at the company’s base near Marshland St. James, near Wisbech, Cambridgeshire. It is the family-owned company’s first Volvo FM, the others being Volvo FL four-wheelers.
The FM is on a 7-year Gold R&M contract with Volvo Truck and Bus Centre East Anglia, who supplied this and the other Volvos in the ADC fleet. Euro 5 was specified to ensure free access to the London LEZ when Stage 2 is implemented. ADC also uses Volvos Dynafleet Online with GPS tracking and environmental reporting.
Director Steve Paige says, “We are doing more and more work for the blue-chip
construction companies. They often ask for information as to how we are reducing our carbon footprint and Dynafleet, together with Euro 5, is part of the package of measures we have taken to demonstrate what we are doing to lower the company’s carbon emissions.”
“GPS also allows us to confirm availability of our trucks in the zones we work in. It means that we can react to urgent jobs in a timely manner within the framework of the routine contract work.”
“The new FM is equipped with a Globetrotter cab and the sleeper will be in regular use,” says Steve, “as one job the truck is often used for is drain clearance on retail parks around the country. The driver overnights in the locality and enters the premises in the early hours before the shops open as parked cars make it impossible to access the drains.”
ADC’s vehicles are on 24/7 callout to handle emergencies and the FM is expected to operate off-road and in tight access situations. For example, it can be working some miles down a riverbank one day and clearing the drainage infrastructure, as part of the ‘pre-adoption’ process, on a new housing development the next.
Specification of the FM includes I-Shift automated gearbox, B-Ride rear suspension and the chassis is fitted with a Fuller 3,000 gallon suction tank which features a 2,000 cubic feet per minute capacity vacuum pump which is capable of working at a depth of 50 metres.

In 1987, a young man graduated from university after completing a thesis into the problems of tipper vehicles overturning, that young man was Grant Faulkner. With his new found knowledge and an abundance of enthusiasm he went about proving the benefits of stability by setting up Harsh Ltd and converting hauliers to use the Harsh stabilised underfloor tipping gear.
“I suppose I am a bit of a petrol head and when I read about 2,000 turnovers per year in the UK, I thought my study might lead to a solution, but I never imagined just how much better the Harsh equipment was in preventing these turnovers.” says Grant Faulkner. “Once I had discovered this equipment, I knew there was a market for it in the UK so I set about to sell it. We tested it ourselves with the MOD just to prove to sceptics what a difference the Harsh gear makes.”
Harsh Ltd took the market by storm by selling a product that gave added benefits to customers; this became the ethos for Harsh Ltd. Over time the range of tipping gears increased to include both underfloor and front-end from 1.5 to 44 tonne, they developed their sheeting system range into a market-leading brand. Their range for the tipping market grew to include all the ancillary equipment requirements (body liners, on board weighing systems, PTO/pumps, tractor kits, automatic greasing systems, reversing cameras etc.)
“The 1990s saw ‘recycling’ become the buzzword and the Harsh customer base started to look for waste handling products so we did our research and introduced Skiploaders and Hooklifts to the range.” explains Grant. “This last 2 years has really seen the handling side of our business take off, our workshops are busier than ever before, particularly with repeat business for the skiploaders. An example of this is Martins of York, they purchased their first Harsh Skiploader in 2005 followed by two in 2006 and another one this year.
From small beginnings in 1995 working mainly for the private sector, Martins has expanded rapidly and now operates a large fleet of skip vehicles and has over 1,000 skips from 4 to 40 yard. They have come a long way in 10 years and have established a good name servicing the needs of the local community, construction and manufacturing industries.
Major house builders such as Barratts, Bellway Homes, Taylor Woodrow and S Harrison Construction choose Martins of York Ltd over other companies, as do construction companies such as Balfour Beatty on their construction of the new York College. Not just on price, but because they can meet their high demand for skips on developments around York.
Martins of York Ltd have invested heavily in recycling over the past few years, with their own transfer station and recycling facility they now reclaim over 70% of the waste handled – producing top soils and aggregates as well as recycling paper, plastics, timber and scrap metals.”
Jason Martin, Director, says “I chose Harsh to supply the equipment on our skip vehicles from 2005 for two reasons – they were local to us and, more importantly, the equipment is sturdy, robust and looks the part. It has proven to be the right choice and we have been delighted not only with the performance but with the after sales service we have received. Harsh are simply first class – to be honest, we feel there is no other option for us other than with Harsh.”
Harsh prides itself on providing its customers with innovative high quality products, that not only meet their needs but provide added benefits. The latest product to be added is the Skip-Flip, a hydraulically operated automated sheeting system to enable the safe, efficient sheeting of skips with the added benefit of saving time.
“We have held back before launching this product to the market to enable a prolonged and strenuous testing period to be completed. The feedback from the operators has been brilliant, every one of them have been impressed with the speed and ease of use and the safety improvement of not having to climb on to the body and not forgetting the ‘Harsh added benefit’ – customers are reporting being able to complete an extra load per day!” says Grant.
