The skip industry is at the centre of a difficult battle in Shoreham Harbour. ‘Skip It Containers’ are facing objections from local residents as they plan to move from their present site in Basin Road South, Portslade, to Kingston Wharf.
The new development would recycle commercial waste, a project which most of the country would apparently back in today’s ‘green’ climate. However the national obsession with reducing our carbon footprint seems only to apply when the recycling plants are a part of another community.
‘Skip It Containers’ are seeking permission to build three large metal containers on the former ‘Pioneer Concrete’ site. The main building would be used to recycle trade waste, while the others would be used for wood-chipping, processing and maintenance
and repairs.

Protestors, backed by Adur District Council, fear that the proposed site would hamper the long term redevelopment plans for the area and add to the already existing traffic problems in Shoreham and along the A259. The new development would be very close to a residential area and residents are concerned about the levels of traffic and the noise and dirt which they fear will become part of their lives.
The application will be decided by West Sussex County Council.
