The Skip Hire Worker Begging to Lose His Job
An employee is taken his company bosses to court – because they refused to make him redundant.
Rodney Wynne, 65, has accused Barry Skip Hire of ageism because the company did not offer him voluntary redundancy.
The Liverpool based company are to be taken to an industrial tribunal by Wynne because he kept his job – a rare case in these recession-hit times.
If Wynne was made redundant, we would have been granted a £14,0000 payout. However, two other workers were sent letters offering them voluntary redundancy.
Wynne had worked at the firm for twenty years as an HGV driver and had been on sick leave with depression when the letters to his colleagues were sent out.
His offer of redundancy was turned down in favour of two other workers whom he believes were chosen as their payouts would be much smaller.
Mr Wynne of Anfield said, “I wrote to them telling them that in view of the economic downturn, I would like to put myself forward for redundancy.
“Then I heard that they had sent letters to other workers offering them the chance to take voluntary redundancy but they hadn’t contacted me. Other people have children and mortgages and might not want to be made redundant.”
Wynne has now retired from the company.
However, the company insists that they needed Wynne to stay on board with the company as he was the only bulk load driver there. The skip wagon drivers were the ones that were most at risk.
Director Gerard Flanagan said, “Mr Wynne’s job wasn’t redundant. He used to take waste to the tip whereas we needed to make skip loaders redundant.
“We haven’t had to make anyone redundant in 35 years but unfortunately it’s a sign of the times.
“Mr Wynne is saying we should have made him redundant at a time when most people are trying to hold onto their jobs.”
He added: “He’s one in a million.”
