ASBESTOS FIND COSTS £18,000

A skip hire firm has been fined £18,000 after pleading guilty to two waste handling offences and a further charge of failing to notify the Environment Agency when it received hazardous waste.
We all know that asbestos is bad news when it comes to our health. But it can also seriously damage our pockets too, if guidelines are not strictly adhered to.
Early last year a member of the public alerted the EA that asbestos was being improperly stored at Bill Dyson Skip Hire and Waste Management Ltd’s Whitehall Road Industrial site, in Leeds.
Although the company has an EA permit to keep and treat controlled waste, the site was not authorised to accept hazardous waste such as asbestos.
The company’s operations manager explained that there was no room for the material in the quarantine area. The roofing was tipped onto the ground because the skip was needed to re-hire.
Leeds magistrates court also ordered the company to pay £1,946 prosecution costs.
